Your Intentions Don’t Mean Anything

You’ve probably heard the phrase that Nike made famous, “Just Do It.” Have you ever thought about why it’s so ingenious? Why we are so attracted to that phrase?

Because it’s exciting.  It raises your cortisol levels! It makes you say, “YEAH LETS DO IT. “ If you don’t believe me, watch this video with Shia LaBeouf and you will be ready to do it!

So my question is, “Why don’t you?”

Oh, you may say, “Well my intentions are good.”  But, good intentions mean nothing without execution.

Nothing.

I have a good friend that will say she is going to do something and then not do it. It could be as simple as me asking her if she’d like to go for a walk and she agrees and then doesn’t do it.

I tell her she has good intentions with poor execution.

Simply put, she doesn’t do what she says she’s going to do. It doesn’t stop with promises made to others; she does it to herself as well. She’s an equal opportunity bad executor. Or, at least, she was.

Recently she said to me, “I have to tell myself that it doesn’t matter how I feel about it—I have to just do it.” She literally says it to herself when she gets up in the morning.  Whereas she used to say, “I’m tired and I don’t want to get up, or go to work, or work-out or take care of whatever.” Now she says to herself,  “It doesn’t matter that I feel tired, I need to just do it.” There’s that phrase again! And her life dramatically improved!

She’s keeping her word to not only others, but to herself. She’s eating better and working out and being diligent with praying and self-care.

Simply put, you need to just do it!

Just do what you ask?:

  • Just put the phone down and get off social media
  • Just take care of the family or pets even when you don’t feel like it
  • Just put on your workout clothes and walk out the door
  • Just put that donut down
  • Just eat that carrot or green smoothie
  • Just go to bed on time or get up a little earlier
  • Just follow through
  • Just smile and say hello to a stranger
  • Just forgive yourself for being imperfect
  • Just pray
  • Just be loving and kind
  • Just be nice when you don’t want to be
  • Just be thankful
  • Just keep your word

Our feelings, although important, are over-rated and can easily misguide us.

Think about if God was like, “Yeah, ya know I just don’t feel like letting the sun shine or I don’t feel like keeping my promises any longer because no one listens any way.”

NO, that is not how it is.  Thank God! He loves us no matter what. But we have the opportunity and the CHOICE to stop and JUST DO IT!

What do you need to do today that you’ve been telling yourself you can’t?

What are you waiting for?  One day or day one? You decide.

Say, “It doesn’t matter how I feel right now, I’m going to just do it!”

And remember, you aren’t doing it alone.  We are here to help you every step of the way.
